Our last day here in Holland was first spent at the University during our final feedback session, then we had the rest of the day free to do as we pleased. Most of us split up in Amsterdam, some went sight-seeing or window-shopping, others stayed out late enjoying the nightlife and a few of us visited the Van Gogh Museum… I was one of these people.
The Van Gogh Museum was INCREDIBLE! When Dr. Lori and I were first discussing this course back in July I remember her mentioning this opportunity – One I immediately knew I couldn’t miss! There was an incredible selection of writings, drawings, and paintings from various authors known world-wide; including Oscar-Claude Monet, Edvard Munch, and of course, Vincent Van Gogh. I was able to see some of the most beautiful pieces I’ve grown up admiring and the real-life signatures of the artists that have inspired me over the years. I think one of the things that strikes me the most is the history behind the work of Van Gogh – By renting one of the automated guides and reading each written section displayed next to each piece, I was able to learn even more about the incredible history behind his work, including where it was created (in some instances from his hospital window), his mindset while he was creating it, what inspired him, and so on and so forth.
It was an incredible, one-in-a-lifetime experience, certainly one of the highlights of the trip, and a memory that will stay with me forever.
